Two years ago, I was placed on the waiting list to have my braces on at the National Dental Centre. Back then, I had six of my teeth extracted which includes my wisdom tooth. Though I have a very high level of tolerance for pain, I opted for General Anesthetic (GA) for the extractions. It was tormenting especially during the Root Canal treatment or also known as endodontic therapy where the surgery includes the removal of nerve tissue, blood vessels and other cellular entities. The tooth had to be cleaned, shaped and decontaminated and the filled with an inert filling such. This has to be done as the tooth can still be saved and treated. So, instead of removing it permanently, it is advisable to cure the infection and save the tooth.
As the dentist drills into the pulp chamber and removes the infected pulp, I was hold back in agony. The dentist then drills the nerve out of the root canal with long needle-shaped drills. With the removal of the nerves and the blood supply from the tooth, it is best that the tooth be fitted with a crown which increases the prognosis of the tooth by six times. It was such a sadistic sight as I watched the dentist drilling my nerves and roots.
I had to admit that I have a very poor oral hygiene practice. I don’t really brush my teeth well as a young kid. People with sweet tooth like me tend to snacks on sweets such as chocolates and candies most of the time. I used to be scared to visit the dentist as I was scared of the intense drilling and the polishing. All the factors brought about a disastrous and damaging effect on me. At the young age of 23, almost all my teeth are decay and require a lot of fillings. As most of my teeth can’t be salvaged, some had to be removed. In order to align my teeth and fill the gaps, I had to go for braces. Appointment has been scheduled and soon I will have them on me. So people, it is useful to know the importance of oral hygiene and this is no joking matter. Each treatment and visits cost will cost you hundred of dollars and the braces itself cost me thousands.
