Wedding Bells ~ Zul and Jayn

I hear wedding bells in the month of June ~ lots of them. It’s a call for a celebration as we give thanks to God for uniting two hearts into one. For my religion, Islam is a strong advocate of marriage. Through marriage, it is the only valid or halal way to indulge in intimacy between a man and a woman. The word “Zawj” is used in the Quran to mean a pair or a mate usually used to refer to marriage. The main purpose is so that men and women can love one another, provide company to each other, procreate and live in peace and tranquility to the commandments of God. That’s one of the reason why a man as to be knowledgeable in his religious practices as he will be the one to guide the wife and family. Marriage also serves as a means to emotional and physical gratification. It is also a form of worship because it is obeying God. It is seen as the only possible way for the sexes to unite under God. One could also choose to live in sin but by choosing marriage one is displaying obedience to God.

For a marriage to be valid certain conditions must be met:

1)Consent of both parties.

2) "Mahr" - a gift from the groom to the bride.

3) Witnesses.

4) The marriage should be publicized. (It should never be kept secret as this can lead to suspicion and troubles within the community.)

As I watch Zul being escorted to his bride, I got reminded on how he used to complaint to us on not having a girlfriend whenever we would meet up. He will be pretending to talk to his so-called imaginary “girlfriend” when the rest of the couples were busy entertaining one another. Those were the times when I got to know him almost about 2 years ago. He has also beaten us to the challenge when he announced his intention to get engaged first as indeed it shocked many of his close friends. When someone has plans for the future, nothing is impossible. Congratulations to Zul and Jayn and may you guys be blessed with a blissful marriage!
