Betrothal is a way of proposing a marriage made by a man to his intended bride. It is to be made in an open and sincere manner, by the man himself (the suitor) or through his family or friends. Before the betrothal, it is permissible for a man to see his and know his intended bride and he is to be satisfied with the woman he intends to marry, taking into consideration every aspect as to avoid either party to breach the contract of the betrothal in the future. During the process and discussion among the trusted family of the groom, the topics discussed are the period of the engagement, the Hantaran (dowry for the Bride) and gifts to the bride to be. It is advisable for the man (the suitor) to give some betrothal gifts to his intended bride which is within his means. The gifts could be in the form of a bangle, gold ring or clothes. Betrothal is encouraged in Islam for it may lead to a prosperous and successful marriage. Hence, the law of syara' permits a man to see his intended bride so that he may not have any regret after he is married to her. However, a man cannot propose a marriage to a woman already betrothed to another man. Nobody told me that this process could be so stressful causing me great anxiety and mental pressure.
