Intelligence can be defined as how quickly or how efficient one adapts to his/her environment. It is a term describing one or more capacities of the mind. This would include abstract thought, understanding, communication, reasoning, learning, planning, emotional intelligence and problem solving. It doesn’t have to be defined as just an IQ score. It is more than about understanding things quickly or picking up things fast and able to comprehend. It includes the ability to remember facts/data or figure out a solution to complicated and abstract problems and executing it well. Most importantly for me, it involves emotional intelligence and special skills. Being intelligent to me is not about getting good grades or obtaining a Degree /Masters or a PHD. It is not always about grades. My understanding on being smart is subjective. I have my own views on it.
Being top in class or the best student in the cohort doesn’t necessarily mean that you are intelligent or good. Grades are nothing for me and being in the top school doesn’t really mean anything to me. I am the top student in my class and I have achieved Scholarships through my years in High school but that doesn’t really make me intelligent. That’s for sure is my perception. People seem to have this perspective that “She is intelligent because she has a degree”. That is definitely passé and such a cliché quote. Through all our years in education, may it be from primary to high school to tertiary; are we applying the skills that we have learnt in our work place? Be realistic about it! A graduate like me doesn’t make use of what she has learned during her attachment in UNI. What I have learned and the skills that I have attained are all from the work experience that I have gathered. So why is obtaining that Bachelor a necessity then?
If you have been applying for work recently, you will notice that most of the high post position requires a least a degree for the qualification. Why is paperwork and qualification in demand? Given a Tom Dick or Harry with experience but no qualification, I am sure they will be able to portray their abilities given the skills and experience that they have. Intelligence can be displayed in people who act ignorant or immoral; just because someone is intelligent, doesn’t mean they “know it all” or can choose the right option every time. Intelligence is relative in certain cultural standpoints, but overall it is seen as a standard of how one uses their mind and actively engages their abilities to accomplish great things within their sphere of influence.
I love working with bright and brilliant individuals. These people are quick in problem solving. They are able to comprehend almost instantaneously and come up with ideas and solutions or a workaround that we can use in resolving an issue. One with great thought focus on an issue and give it a clear understanding before laying the explanation. It turned me off if a person tries to act smart and interfere in the discussion with an improper results or solution. Trying to act smart is it? That definitely won’t work for me!
At a recent business appointment, as we were seated during a discussion, I was impressed on how quick-witted and resourceful we were working as a team. We refer to Andy and me. It was surprising that despites all the huge differences that we have as a couple, we didn’t notice that we do have a lot in common. He is smart and he complements me thus making me a perfectionist. With him around, I feel empowered in handling difficult situations as I began bombarding the partners with unplanned questions. It all came naturally. Having him around to work with me is like having a balance of intelligent and emotional quotation. He made me wiser and we are able to discuss on plans and executions. We share the same views and opinion when it comes to work related issue. That’s what makes me proud of him. As per discussion, 5 year plan here we come…Maybe we can make it work on other personal issues too, shall we?
P.S: Does your partner makes you intelligent?
